21 Best Paddle Boards for Dogs (2023)

Stand-up paddleboarding is heaps of fun but choosing a great paddleboard for a person can be tricky. But even harder? Choosing the best paddle boards for dogs!

There are so many different varieties on the market that it’s hard to know where to start. They all just seem so similar! Even though the prices vary dramatically.

What Makes a Paddle Board Dog-Friendly?

When choosing a dog-friendly paddle board, there are a few key features you should look out for.

Durability

The board needs to be made of a sturdy, weather-resistant material that can also withstand the wear and tear that comes from paws and claws.

It also should be of solid construction and made with the highest grade materials you can afford.

Size

The size of the board that you need will depend on two key factors: the size of your dog/s, and how you’ll be using the board.

A recreational paddle-boarder with a smaller pup will only need to invest in an average-sized board. These usually come in at a fairly standard price point and are easy to source.

If you’re going to be using your paddle board for overnight trips, then you’ll need a larger board to fit both your dog and your gear. These can be a little pricier. However, they’re a worthy investment if you know you will get a reasonable amount of use out of them.

Weight Limits

Again, consider the size of your dog and the purpose of your board very carefully. You want to be able to carry yourself, your pup, and any gear you may need without weighing down your board.

Note down the weight of you and your pooch, and take this with you while shopping for a board. Remember too that a wet dog will weigh more. If you know your pup is likely to swim, then be sure to take that added water weight into account.

So to make it easier, we’ve braved the waves ourselves and curated the best boards. Read more information about each later in the article.

Best Dog-Friendly Paddle Board Overall

ROC Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

For the average dog owner, the ROC Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board checks every box. This board is durable, and sturdy, and comes highly recommended by dog owners.

Designed for adults, this board can accommodate weights of up to 350lbs. This generous limit makes the ROC a great choice if you’re paddling with more than one small to the medium-sized pooch, or a single larger dog.

The non-slip material used on the board’s surface will ensure both you and your pup stay steady and dry.

This board also ships out with all the necessary accessories. An adjustable aluminum paddle, backpack, waterproof drybag, safety leash, D rings, main fin, and pump are all included in the price. It’s just pawfect for beginners!

Best Under $1000

Thurso Surf Waterwalker

Looking for a mid-range board? The Thurso Surf Inflatable All Around Walterwalker is a perfect choice if you’re making an initial investment or upgrading to your second board.

The board measures 11” x 32” x 6”, making it slightly larger than other mid-range boards. This extra room is enough to accommodate both you and your pup, plus some extra gear. With a weight capacity of only 330lbs, however, it is best designed for smaller journeys and lighter dogs.

The Thurso Surf Waterwalker is a picture of durability. This board features a double-layered design, pairing a woven drop-stitch inner core with a PVC tarpaulin layer.

Another highlight of this board is the included carbon shaft paddle. These are stronger and more durable than the standard fiberglass paddle you’ll find on most boards. We loved this extra touch, and this attention to user experience really solidified the board’s value for money. A poor-quality paddle can absolutely ruin a day out on the water.

wkersiy Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

There is no way I could skip over the wkersiy Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board. It literally comes in a fun, surfy, dog-themed colorway! Just a few of my favorite things.

Outside of its exciting artistic choices, this is just an all-around well-designed board. It’s lightweight and easy to maneuver, weighing in at only 18.2lbs, but being able to accommodate up to 333lbs.

The surface is made of Nylon and is certainly thick enough to withstand any dog-related wear and tear. You’re also well-protected in case of any valve leakage. The board is built using a mix of drop-stitched fabric and boat-grade PVC.

FunWater Inflatable Ultra-Light SUP

The FunWater Inflatable Ultra-Light SUP is perfect for any beginner paddle boarder who is looking to invest in themselves. It includes a backpack, coil leash, waterproof bag, adjustable aluminum paddle, hand pump, and three removable fins. It is best suited to small dogs, with a weight capacity of 300lbs.

The biggest highlight of this board, of course, is that it is ultra-light. Weighing in at only 8lbs, this paddle board could easily be switched between hikers if you wanted to bring it along on a day trip. Its size makes it very simple to roll up and store! Since we travel with such a big pack of dogs, having even that little bit of extra space in the car is important to us.

The only issue we had (and many reviewers seem to echo this) is that the pump can be a little bit touch-and-go and isn’t necessarily the most intuitive. Our problem seemed to be mostly user error. In the case of genuine pump issues, however, other owners reported that the customer service team was helpful and willing to assist in fixing their issues.

FEATH-R-LITE Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

As light as a feather. Okay, not quite… but close enough in paddle board terms!

Designed with ultra-lite, military-grade PVC, the FEATH-R-LITE Inflatable SUP is 35% lighter than similar brands. It weighs in at just 20.7lbs and can carry 350lbs with ease. The board measures 11’6” x 33” x 6”, making it a practical choice for a majority of dog owners.

Since I spend the majority of my set-up time juggling my dogs and whatever I’m trying to achieve, I really appreciate an easy setup. This makes the pump a favorite of mine. It’s quick to start working and the inflation pressure is easy to read, meaning I don’t have to keep too close of an eye on it.

It also comes with a standard accessories package, which further cements the high quality and great price point.

Aqua Plus 6inches Thick Inflatable SUP

With its fun checkerboard print, inclusive accessory package, and simple setup, you can’t go past the Aqua Plus when choosing a high-quality, mid-range board.

This inflatable board is only 1” in diameter when deflated and 10’6” x 33” x 6” when inflated. This makes it a great “grab and go” board for the casual paddler who prioritizes space. It also makes it a great size for the majority of dog breeds!

What truly sells this board as a dog-friendly SUP is the groove traction grip. The 5mm comfort diamond grooves provide extra stability for both paws and human feet.

NARATA Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

Another great board with increased stability support is the NARATA. It boasts an anti-slip deck that can accommodate both you and the average-sized pup.

The handles are also easy to grip, which makes for a much smoother launch than the average board. This is a great investment to make when you are paddling with your dog. The last thing you need is to start your trip off on the wrong paw.

This board is a standard size (10’6” x 32” x 6”) but has an increased weight capacity. It can safely hold up to 400lbs, making it a great choice for large dogs.

Plus, you’ll find your new best friend in the four-minute quick inflating pump. This is a lifesaver when you have an impatient pet in tow.

Best Budget Board

Gili Inflatable Standup Paddleboard

The Gili Inflatable SUP delivers everything you need on a board at a fair price point. It’s lightweight (only 19lbs) yet sturdy enough to handle even the rowdiest dogs, made from cross-stitched and reinforced PVC to prevent dings and dents.

Like most boards, it comes with a quality accessory package: a travel paddle, inflatable backpack, hand pump, coiled leash, and center fin.

While this is a great beginner board, it is really only suitable for smaller dogs. While the size accommodates an extra friend (10’6” x 32” x 6”), the weight capacity is only 295 lbs. I’d recommend this for a casual paddle rather than one where you will need to bring excess gear and your dog.

You’ll also receive a two-year warranty and free returns for 60 days! Perfect if you’re ordering online and unsure of what exactly you need in a board.

ANCHEER Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

Another fantastic budget-conscious, dog-friendly paddleboard for small dogs. The ANCHEER comes with a non-slip deck pad, a maximum capacity of 286lbs, and a high-pressure pump.

I would really recommend this board if you enjoy a combination of hiking and paddling. It weighs in at only 13.8lbs and can be quickly rolled down for backpack storage. It takes up very little room, leaving more space for all of the dog bowls and toys you undoubtedly need to carry around.

Crew Axel Inflatable Paddle Board

A new-release 2023 board, the Crew Axel Inflatable Paddle Board is perfect for the outdoor adventurer. It weighs only 18lbs but has a weight capacity of over 320lbs, making it a great choice for any dog, as well as any type of paddling or hiking.

Included in the package is a dual pump with a gauge, upgraded paddles, an ultra-durable leash, and a repair kit. The repair kit is a fantastic addition to a budget board and means all possible expenses are covered in the initial cost.

You’ll also find a camera mount built into the board. This is an easy opportunity for you and your pup to nab some great snaps together!

Bluefin Cruise SUP Stand Up Inflatable Paddle Board

The Bluefin Cruise is a little pricier than some of the other budget boards on this list, starting at $452.61, but it makes up for this with a cost-efficient five-year warranty.

The dimensions of the board are 128” x 33” x 6”, with a max weight limit of 309lbs. It makes for a great board that is suitable for a variety of dog breeds.

This board is also super inflatable. While most inflatable SUPs can only reach 12-15 PSI, the Bluefin Cruise has a limit of 28 PSI. This means increased stability for you and your pup.

This dog-friendly paddle board can also double as a kayak with its clip-on seat attachment. Its duality as a two-in-one watercraft really seals the deal on its awesome affordability.

Most Versatile Board

NIXY Newport Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

The NIXY Newport SUP is a perfect all-around board. It has a weight capacity of 300lbs and measures 10’6” x 33” x 6”, making it a great choice for any breed.

Its reinforced carbon side rails make it one of the more durable boards on the list. The NIXY can easily withstand rockier waterways with stronger currents, while still maintaining the simple setup and design of a lightweight beginner’s board. At only 21lbs, it has all the versatility of a less durable board with the benefits of added reinforcements.

Your dog will also appreciate the extra wide, non-slip, UV-protected deck pad while you brave the rougher seas.

Best for Small/Medium Dogs

NRS Thrive Stand-Up Paddleboard

This board has a smaller-than-average design and reduced weight capacity (the 9ft 10” size can only carry up to 180lbs). Owners of smaller dogs rejoice! This board is perfect for you.

The NRS is lightweight and durable, meaning that if you can get away with the lighter weight capacity, then this board opens up an entirely new world of adventures. You can easily store this in a backpack when deflated and embark on any trip your heart desires.

It includes three all-water fins, a touring fin, a high-pressure pump and gauge, a travel pack bag, a valve adapter, and a well-fitted repair kit.  You can inflate the NRS to 20 PSI, so no need to worry about losing your balance on a soft board.

Pau Hana Backcountry Solo

The Pau Hana was designed to ‘spark joy’ and that is exactly what it will do for those who travel with smaller breeds!

This board is being hailed as the “first hikeable paddleboard”, designed for backcountry hiking and adventures. It can be used as either a full-sized SUP or Pack Raft canoe paddle and packs down to an impressive 23lbs inclusive of the dry bag.

The Pau Hana can hold a maximum of 215lbs. It’s perfect for one medium-sized dog or two smaller-sized pups.

Best for Large/Multiple Dogs

Isle Pioneer Inflatable SUP

A high-quality, wide-stance board with an increased surface size and 285lb weight capacity. The Isle Pioneer Inflatable SUP is a great choice for anyone who travels with larger breeds or multiple medium-sized dogs.

Its construction makes it tough enough to survive those bigger paws and claws, with the board being made of military-grade PVC. You have the freedom to explore rockier outcrops and rougher waters, or you can choose to simply relax along your usual lazy river.

Alongside the board itself, you’ll also receive a well-equipped accessories kit. This includes an adjustable carbon shaft and nylon paddle, carry backpack, high-pressure pump, coil leash, sticker pack, and snap-in travel fin.

Inflatable PVC 10-14 Person Oversized Paddle Board

best paddle boards for dogs

This board is a must-have for anyone hoping to take the water with their whole pack in tow. It’s designed for 10 to 14 people, meaning it can easily accommodate all of your four-legged friends.

While we absolutely love this board for how fun and novel it is, it probably isn’t the best choice for the hardcore explorer or everyday paddler.

Take this as more of an honorary mention rather than a die-hard recommendation. You’ll have buckets of fun at the lakehouse over the summer, but you certainly won’t be tackling any advanced routes.

Best for Beginners

Freein Stand Up Paddle Board

The Freein Stand Up Paddle Board knows exactly what a beginner needs, and it makes sure to deliver!

This board comes with a removable kayak seat accessory. While this might sound odd for a SUP, it’s a great way to learn to navigate your board and gain some open-water experience.

Whether you choose to have a seat attached or not, there is still more than enough space for your pup to join you. The board is designed to accommodate extra passengers (including pups) and measures 10” x 31” x 6”. This sizing also increases the board’s stability. It is a better choice for beginners than other more narrow SUPs.

Like to capture your adventures on video? You’ll be happy to know about the Go-Pro base at the tip of the board.

Nixy Monterey G4 Expedition

The G4 Expedition can survive anything you throw at it, making it one of my ultimate recommendations for beginners. Every new paddler has accidents when they are first starting out. You want to invest in a board that will survive any mishaps – whether they be human or dog related.

With an increased surface size and a massive maximum weight of 400lbs, the G4 provides plenty of accommodations for all those extra supplies you need when you’re learning to paddle. It also comes with carbon-reinforced side rails to prevent any dings or dents from damaging your board. We’ve all been there!

If your dog is also a first-time paddler, then they will find great comfort in the extra-wide non-slip deck pad. A comfortable dog is a still dog. This is exactly what you want while learning to carry a passenger.

Atoll 11′ Foot Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

The Atoll 11’ Foot Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board also has that desired wide-set design and 400lb weight capacity, making it a perfect first-choice board. It is a great all-around board that can withstand any environment.

The Atoll comes with all the equipment a beginner could need (think high-pressure pump, front and back bungee tie-downs, removable fins, and a travel backpack with a waist strap). Its big drawcard, though, is that the fins can be attached and removed without using any tools. Super simple!

Highpi Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board

You can’t talk about beginner boards without the Highpi Inflatable SUP getting a mention.

With a wide-stance design, non-slip deck, and 350lb weight capacity, this board is certainly solidly built. It’s the perfect board to learn to balance on and can easily accommodate a pet learning to paddle, too.

One of the biggest benefits of this SUP is that its design is just as intuitive off of the water. The Highpi takes only five minutes to inflate or deflate and comes with a full accessory kit.

While many boards are simply dog-friendly by chance, the Highpi is dog-friendly by design. It’s one of my favorite beginner boards for paddlers with pets.

Cooyes Paddle Board

If you’re a beginner looking for versatility, this is the board for you. The Cooyes SUP features all of the usual accessories, plus an emergency repair kit and attachable kayak seat!

This board is designed to help you find your balance. The 330lb weight limit, increased thickness, and solid DWF epoxy-reinforced material will keep both you and your pup standing tall.

It’s also very time efficient in its setup. The Cooyes board takes only three minutes to inflate, meaning there is less time for your dog to get into mischief while you prepare the equipment.

Final Thoughts

There is definitely more than just one best stand up paddle board for dogs on the market, and which board is right for you will vary greatly depending on your needs and values.

Hopefully, this list has pointed you in the right direction to find the perfect board for you and your dog. Remember to check weight limits, consider the type of paddling you would like to do, and think about your dog’s specific needs.

Now get ready to take to the water, scallywags!
